Debbie Harry may be ready to pull the plug on Blondie after four decades of making music together. The singer is apparently considering her options following the group's new album, Ghosts of Download.
"Nothing is confirmed yet," Harry's spokesman told the Daily Mail. "They are in a hiatus at the moment." But the band's drummer revealed that age may be wearing the 80s icon, who turned 68 on 1 July.
"Debbie is 11 years older than the rest of us, so it's on her mind," explained Clem Burke. "We've tried to keep it going for as long as possible, but it's not just up to me. Nothing is finalised yet, but obviously there's no Blondie without Debbie Harry."
Burke also reflected on the band's recent gig at Delamere Forest in Cheshire, where Harry was booed after talking about the lovely day they'd had in Manchester. "I [got] off the drums and I [walked] over and I [said], 'Debbie, Liverpool. We're near Liverpool,'" he said. "Then we [played] Please Please Me – so we made amends."
Ghosts of Download, Blondie's 10th studio album, is due later this year. The record's guest musicians include Beth Ditto, Latino hip-hop crew Los Rakas and the Colombian collective Systema Solar. "As a band, we have always taken great pride in constantly reinventing our sound and style,"Harry recently told Vogue UK. "I think if you love what you do – and as a band we love to make music – that's why we keep doing what we keep doing." Blondie have more concerts scheduled in September and October, and will reportedly play at least a handful of dates next year.
Formed in New York in the mid-70s, Blondie have sold more than 40m albums, and had eight UK top 10s. They were admitted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
