YouTube May Lose $470 Million In 2009

YouTube May Lose $470 Million In 2009: AnalystsCredit Suisse Report Estimates Video Site Will Generate $240 Million In RevenueTodd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 4/3/2009 1:43:00 PM MT

Google's YouTube -- the Internet's most popular video site -- could be on track to lose approximately $470 million in 2009, according to a report Friday by Credit Suisse.

While YouTube remains the leader in online video with 41% share of total domestic video streams, "monetization remains challenging," Credit Suisse analysts Spencer Wang and Kenneth Sena wrote.

According to the firm's analysis of YouTube traffic and ad strategies, the site is on track to generate about $240 million in revenue in 2009, up about 20% year over year.

But the cost of bandwidth, content licensing, ad-revenue shares, hardware storage, sales and marketing and other expenses will total about $711 million, putting YouTube squarely in the red, the Credit Suisse report estimated. Bandwidth accounts for about 51% of expenses -- with a run rate of $1 million per day -- with content licensing accounting for 36%.

"In our view, the issue for YouTube going forward is to increase the percentage of its videos that can be monetized (likely through more deals with content companies) and to drive more advertiser demand through standardization of ad formats and improved ad effectiveness," the analysts wrote.

YouTube, which still derives most of its traffic from user-generated content, has been attempting to increase its lineup of professionally produced content. Earlier this week, for example, YouTube announced a deal with Disney-ABC Television Group and ESPN, which will provide content clips for dedicated channels on the video site.

Credit Suisse projected YouTube will serve 75 billion video streams in 2009, up 38% compared with last year.

To arrive at the estimated $360 million bandwidth tab for YouTube, the analysts assumed the site will receive 375 million unique visitors in 2009 and that a maximum of 20% of those users are on the site at any given time. Credit Suisse's analysis then assumed each user downloads a video at 400 kilobits per second, to yield a peak bit run-rate for YouTube of 30 million megabits per second.

How are videos featured on YouTube

Ok, so one of my Videos is featured? How did this happen and where does it show others that my Vid is featured ?

YouTube has different methods of choosing featured video. Sometimes they'll have "guest representatives" doing the choosing. Sometimes they're chosen by YouTube's editors (via messages to editor@youtube.com). Other times, it's just because someone at YouTube just really likes the video, and yet other times, they're themed picks, or related to current events. There's really no way to tell what is going to be next.

Congratulations, though. Featured videos generally get TONS of views.

If you go to your YouTube home page (http://www.youtube.com/), and you ahve it set up to show the featured videos module, you can see the current features there.

Oh, and if the content is entirely your own, you have a pretty good chance of making partner if you've been featured and apply.

I think I'll be shutting down my Twitter account soon

Twitter is deleting posts on me. It's not my account anymore when something behind the scenes is overtaking it. Others have noticed similar strange behavior in recent days. They may overlook this as a technical glitch, but from what I've read on the internet, hackers really do steal administrator passwords and break into real user accounts. That's like stealing someone's e-mail account without authorization.

As for YouTube, people lose their YT accounts over nothing so you really take your accounts' life into your hands when you upload anything new there. I know there are system bigwigs deleting items in my play lists that originated from other accounts - that has been going on since day 1. I usually have 48-72 hours before something in my play list gets deleted from the other corresponding account, and the only way those things would have gotten attention would be if someone was watching my account to harass me severely. They've backed off a bit since the beginning of 2008, but I know they're still there and it makes me horribly hesitant to upload anything...if I had anything to upload. I'll probably get a second account if I get on a roll and have many items to upload.

Remember, they can steal anything in sight or sound.. or text.
