Plymouth couple sues N.Y.'s Waldorf-Astoria over alleged bedbugs

Plymouth— A stay at New York's famed Waldorf Astoria turned into a nightmare, according to a suit filed today by a Plymouth couple who say they were attacked by bedbugs at the posh hotel.
David and Christine Drabicki were chosen by Allstate Insurance — David's employer — for an all expenses-paid conference in May, said their attorney Alan Schnurman of New York City.

"On May 27 they arrived and on May 28, Christine woke up with bites and blood on her sheets," Schnurman told The Detroit News today.
The couple was moved — with their luggage — to a suite but the bedbug bites continued, Schnurman said. Worse still, when they arrived home, the bedbugs came with them and even feasted on the couple's two daughters, ages 10 and 12, according to the complaint.
The suit, which Schnurman filed today in New York, accuses the hotel of "negligence, carelessness and recklessness" and failing to take due care and caution by allowing the rooms to be infested with bedbugs.
The couple had to leave their home for six weeks while exterminators fumigated it and 1,000 pounds of clothing had to be treated, Schnurman said.
Waldorf Astoria officials said there wasn't evidence of bedbugs in the room.
"The Waldorf Astoria takes allegations of bedbugs very seriously because the safety and well-being of our guests is of paramount importance," hotel officials said in a statement. "While we typically do not comment on pending litigation, we will share that the hotel took the guestroom in question out of service and had it inspected by an outside specialist. The official inspection reports stated there was no evidence or indication of bedbugs."
Schnurman provided pictures of what appears to be multiple bites on Christine Drabicki's body at a press conference in New York. He said she has been depressed and unable to work, and that the entire family feels ostracized because friends and family are afraid to come into their home.
