New York Attorney General Subpoenas Sony
By NICK BILTONAssociated Press
New York’s attorney general, Eric Schneiderman, on Tuesday issued a subpoena to Sony requesting information about how it protects customers’ personal information. The subpoena comes after the company’s servers were breached by unknown hackers last month.
New York state law-enforcement officials said Mr. Schneiderman, issued the subpoena to three divisions of Sony — Sony Computer Entertainment America, Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Online Entertainment.
Sony has said that its servers were infiltrated by hackers resulting in the possible loss of more than 77 million customers’ personal information.
In online underground hacker forums, individuals claiming responsibility for the attacks on Sony said that software on the company’s servers was outdated, and that the security of the PlayStation Network was lax. PlayStation was one of several Sony services that were breached.
Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The subpoenas have been added to a long list of other questions for Sony coming from Congress, United States Senators and foreign countries.
