Police Warn About Planned ‘Bash Mob’ in Long Beach
LONG BEACH, Calif. (KTLA) — Police in Long Beach were warning residents on Friday about a planned “bash mob” of individuals attacking innocent people and businesses.
The so-called “bash mobs” involve a group that assembles suddenly and commits thefts, vandalism and assaults before fleeing the area.
Over 100 people participated in a “bash mob” in Long Beach on July 9, police said.
On July 9 at about 8:00 p.m., well over 100 people participated in a bash mob in the Pike and City Place area of downtown Long Beach, police said.
Detectives conducting a follow-up investigation learned about another planned event by the same group on Friday beginning at 2 p.m., officials said.
There was a similar incident on Tuesday night in Hollywood involving as many as 50 marauding young people.
They attacked tourists and stole cell phones and purses. The group also stole from stores, hauling off a cash register in one case.
At least a dozen people were arrested, and many more were being sought in connection with the attacks.
Authorities warned that mere participation in such an event can result in felony charges including conspiracy, punishable by prison time.
