Governor plans to completely eliminate welfare for families

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing to completely eliminate the state's welfare program for families, medical insurance for low-income children and Cal Grants cash assistance to college and university students.

The proposals to sharply scale back the assistance that California provides to its neediest residents came in testimony by the administration this afternoon at a joint legislative budget committee hearing. It followed comments by the governor earlier today that he would be withdrawing a proposal to help balance the budget with billions of dollars of borrowing and replacing it with program reductions.

The proposals would completely reshape the state's social service network, transforming California from one of the country's most generous states to one of the most tightfisted. The proposals are intended to help close a budget deficit estimated at $21.3 billion.

The thing is that Arnold is overshooting with his cuts but I'm thinking the riots will happen if Welfare is cut by even 25%.

I'm viewing this as political blackmail by Ahnuld. Basically "if someone doesn't give us money soon I'll throw all the poor people out on the street".
It doesn't strike me as a serious proposal, but one that is going to be used as a weapon to bludgeon the Feds into bailing out Cali.

I expect that the vast majority of these programs you identify don't cost much money and have critical functions.

Why don't people put blame where blame is due: $900 BILLION spent each and every year on the military? Instead of properly criticizing this spending as wasteful and counter-productive, we have idealogues bitching about a few billion spent on healthcare for poor people. Such backwards priorities are twisted and mean. ************

He's just bluffing. He wants the legislature to realize he's going to decimate their voters and they'll be booted out on their asses. Someones got to get cut and these asshats should do it fairly across the spectrum.
