Hikes in credit card charges causing grocery stores to close

Residents Upset Over Grocery Store Closures

BEECHVIEW (KDKA) ― Pittsburgh, KDKA Two local grocery stores have closed in the past month, which is inconveniencing the shoppers and the communities they once served.

A lot of people walking by the Foodland storefront are shaking their heads and agree that the closing will be a major blow for the neighborhood.

The same goes in Castle Shannon.

The reason for the closure stems from how credit card companies are billing the owners for transactions.

Lisa Crowley spends a lot more time on the T, buses or on foot just to get the basics for her family.

"I have to go all the way to the North Side to get my groceries because I don't have a vehicle," Crowley said.

The Foodland on Broadway in Beechview closed this week.

"Everyone up here thinks it's just crazy because we don't know what else to do. There's nothing close. If you don't have a car, you're in trouble. You have to figure out other ways to get food," Crowley said.

Hikes in credit card charges were just too much for market owners to handle and left them with no choice but to pack up and lock up.

In Castle Shannon, moving vans have replaced the once steady flow of food delivery trucks.

"We also saw a lot of people that would ride the trolley, get off at this stop, come up and shop and carry their bags back on the trolley. It's going to be missed, no doubt," Elaine Herr said.

There are rumors that a major grocery store chain could move into the Beechview location and many residents hope that is the case.
