Kent does covers of the music that inspires him and by doing so he has inspired many, including myself. I was sad to hear of this account being suspended. Under what grounds has this been done?

This is kept private between the parties involved.

I must petition this action. Many of us, including myself are outraged. Most of his channel was of his own works. While still covering mostly Van-Halen, his approach towards the music he played was unique. Eddie himself couldn't copy Kent.

No one here can give you the answer. But, "covering mostly Van-Halen" would point to a guess that he had 3 copyright infringement claims from the owners of this music. Even for covers one should in general obtain permission from the copyright owners.

So it's alright to play music, as long as you aren't too good at it? Also, i thought copyright implied money being made.

It doesn't really matter good or bad, what matters is permission from the copyright owner.

>Also, i thought copyright implied money being made.

That is one of those strange Web based myths, copyright means that some owns the music and gets to say how it is used.

That is a bunch of crap.  People can do cover versions, without permission.  Also look up fair use.

Maybe Eddie is just afraid because his son sucks and can't fill his shoes.

People cannot do cover versions without permission, and fair use is an assertive defence which can only be proven in court. Fair use most likely does not allow full-length covers broadcast globally.

Level of talent is the key I would guess. I emailed the following about this issue to Connie.Ashton@stagethreemusic.com, the owners of Van Halen's catalog:

Hello:
I understand that your office is responsible for Kent Carlevi's YouTube account no longer being active. Whatever the reason, it's a shame that this has happened, apparently do to some perceived significant loss to your company. More productive in my mind would have been to try to have such talent signed to provide income for all involved that have this level of talent, or feel financially threatened by it.
I don't think there was any great reward being reaped by Mr. Carlevi, nor any perceptible loss to your company. If anything, I think that persons wowed by his videos might just spend some money the only place available: companies such as yours that have rights to the original performers' music. Where else could they go?
    Have a decent weekend.

Here we are again with a question ultimately returning to intellectual property rights.  Yeah, it would be great if we could get all this stuff for free, but then who would create it?  Shouldn't they get paid?  And how?
My friends and I have been avid followers of Mr. Carlevi.  Granted, we ain't players, we're hacks, but we hope he will continue to inspire us.  And maybe, as talented as he is, he could write his own riffs.
Until then, we're willing to throw in a couple of bucks to cover his copyright infringements, just so we can keep butchering those same smooth licks our own cheap, beat-up guitars.
Anyone else want to chip in?

You wanna know why?

Because record companies (and movie studios as well) operate by feeding us the following illusion : that they are the one and only true source of talented people. They want you to believe that they have UNIQUE artists, one in a million. And why is that? So they can charge whatever value they want from their products, and tell us it's this price because this artist is a one-in-a-million kind of person.

Think about it. Why does Tom Hanks gets 20 million dollars per movie he makes? They say "Because people will only go to a movie because Tom Hanks is in it, he is a talented and very poopular actor". Indeed, mr. Hanks is a very talented actor, but how unique is he? From all actors, professional or amateur, how unique is he? Are you positelvitely SURE that no people on Earth could act like him? The big corporations sure want you to think that yes, HE is the only one, he is a god amongst peasants. If fact, the true answer is NO. There must be thousands of actors around the globe who could perform like him.

So what does this have to do with Kent? Kent is showing us that the little man can do wonderful things. He's showing that the talent to play guitar dos not exclusively belongs to record companies. Kent's telling us that there may be hundreds of anonymous guitarrists out there who are perfectly capable of playing like Eddie. There are thousands, thousands of youtube videos where people pick up a guitar and try to cover a tune. So why just ban Kent? Because he may be the only true talent who got 9 million views. He's a threat to the whole religion imposed by big corporations.

I know it's a little psycho-conspiracy thought, but ... it's my take on this.

Hi, Well, my opinion is, there is a lot of trash on the web, including many of youtube videos. I've seen lots of stuff, good or bad, from lousy covers, through bootleg videos. I've watched many of Kent's videos, and I've never seen anything that goes against copyright laws. There are many othrer users who like to play, uploading lots and lots of videos, TV shows, movies, news, etc. How many of you have gone into a bar with a live band, who has been playing these covers... and these guys are getting paid by playing those covers... I think they are indeed going against copyrighted material, but hey, let's get real, It would be highly rare (and expensive) to find Edie Van Halen, playing at the Pub on at the corner of your house. So, I've watched a lot of Kent's material, and I was never charged for anything. So, please, give Kent's account back. Thanks.
