A statue of Jackie Robinson sitting outside MCU Park in Coney Island has been vandalized with spray-painted swastikas and racist slurs. Team officials for the Brooklyn Cyclones toldCBS New York they made the discovery on Wednesday morning.
“Immediately we went into action to try to clean it and remove the graffiti,” said Billy Harner, the team's director of communications. “We have video surveillance of the area, we're looking at the tapes to investigate exactly what took place."
Crews covered the slurs with duct tape as fans arrived at the park in advance of the team's 11am ET game. They are using a solution to remove the paint. Police are investigating.
The statue depicts the iconic image of Ree Weese Reese with his arm around Robinson during the 1947 season.
The Cyclones are a minor league affiliate of the New York Mets.
