More bad news for L.A.'s embattled porn-star community. First an HIV scare puts them out of work temporarily. Then testing at their favorite health clinic is shut down by the state. Now comes word that oral sex might be linked to a rise in head and neck cancer.
That's right, HPV, a.k.a papillomavirus, or genital warts, can set off those cancers, researchers say.
Bummer. And while head and neck cancers are going down as a result of anti-smoking efforts, cancers of the tonsil and at the base of the tongue are increasing. Ya heard, Charlie Sheen ... ... cancers at the base of the tongue. (At least someone's doing it right).
William Lydiatt, professor and chief of head and neck surgical oncology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center tells USA Today that "60 to 70 percent of all tonsil cancers in the U.S. are HPV-related," Lydiatt said.
That's almost 69 percent, people. Look alive.
The is especially bad news for the porn industry, which has been under attack for its lack of condom use. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation wants the state to enforce mandatory condoms on-set. What's next, dental dams? That's hot stuff.
The increase has been happening since 1973 and, yes, researchers think younger people have more oral sex than their forebears (Charlie Sheen vs. Martin Sheen; Bristol Palin vs. Sarah Palin, etc., theoretically) so, eh, pat yourselves on the top of your heads, kids.
But don't worry, Charlie.
Researchers say these cancers are easier to treat than others if caught early. So next time you have an upset stomach, Charlie, have the docs check out your tongue -- just in case.
These cancers "have been a lot easier to treat. You can use less-intensive radiation," Dr. D.J. Verret, clinical assistant professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, told USA Today.
Charlie Sheen already has HERPES! I bet he has HPV for a LONG time! With Lung Cancer and Nose problems. Walking corpse that screwed over Crew Member's in REAL HOLLYWOOD out REAL PAYCHECKS. Good Luck, Chuck!
Nice use of the porn issue to prompt keywords and page views. Porn stars aren't the only ones sucking cock every day...but you probably wouldn't know that since the women of L.A. certainly aren't sucking yours.
HPV is a very serious issue that afflicts almost 80% of sexually active men and women, and many of them don't even know it. Nice job leaving the important stuff out.
It would have been nice to read more about the numbers and stats and less about porn stars an charlie sheen. Its interesting because porn stars although have far more sex than your average slut they also get tested more.
Dennis Romero you did a horrible job writing this article every sentence i read all i felt was agony at your horrible attempt to create humor stick to your job and inform people on news and nothing more. Anyways about this article thats really shocking how they are just now finding this out then again its probably the same scientist that found out humans get aids from monkeys.... Society will believe anything these days.
You forgot to mention the best part-- the HPV virus can lie dormant for years before metastasizing. I spent most of last year being treated for exactly this kind of cancer (base of tongue, stage 3; HPV-derived, according to my oncologist), yet I haven't gone down on anyone in years (never mind why). I can tell you from bitter experience that there is nothing whatsoever amusing about the cancer experience-- in my case, 35 radiation treatments and 3 chemo sessions were required, and eight months after the end of treatment I still have a very dry mouth, no saliva to speak of and a near-constant metallic taste in my mouth, all of which makes eating an ordeal at times. I'm in complete agreement with those who feel that this is most definitely not a joking matter, and that the author of this article sounds like a world-class dickhead. (By the way, this is also, reportedly, the leading type of cancer found among teenaged girls.)
HPV has also been implicated in anal cancers - not to take the fun out of everything in life, but just so you know. The correlation between HPV and cancers has been known for a long time, and involves the same strains that cause cervical cancer. I think it makes a strong case for HPV vaccines for the general population and not just women under a certain age. Also, the really warty strains of HPV are not always the same strains as the ones associated with cancers - it is very possible, especially in men to have a HPV infection without symptoms. Ok, so I took the fun out of everything.
I found out recently after a pap smear that I have HPV,which scared me to death. I have been with two men in the span of four years, and yet it has only been recently this was diagnosed in a pap smear. I do not know from whom this came from, or when. I've could have had it for 10 years. I have no symptoms, nothing out of the ordinary. There is no test available for men, except by visual inspection, and only then is it detectable if he has warts. Condoms are NOT effective from passing this along to your partner. As my doctor said, it is assumed most women over 30 have it, or have had it. As my doctor also said, they don't even test for hpv in europe, and 70% of new cases are undetectable within a year. So for those who may not think they have it, never say never.
This article trivializes a serous health issue and once again, if it has anythong to do with sex all Romero can fixate on is porn. He reminds me of a sex hysterical adolescent boy who is immature about anything to do with sex that all he can do is make lame jokes and snicker. Getting AIDS is just a joke to him, getting cancer is fodder for more dumb jokes.
There is some level of responsibility involved in writing about dangerous diseases and dealing with them and this sure misses the mark. By the way, HPV is practicaly epidemic in some populations of young women in LA- especially young women of color. HPV can cause cervical cancer, i've know several women who had that, some are now dead. Hey Dennis, make some more dopey jokes about - I'm sure you can work Charlie Sheen into it somehow.
Please mention that there is a vaccine available to prevent the four most common types of HPV, Gardasil! This vaccine is safe and effective for men and women ages 9 to 26. The goal is to vaccinate young people before they are exposed to HPV.
