RIVERSIDE COUNTY-- A San Diego police officer and his wife have pleaded not guilty to trashing and looting their former house, which was in foreclosure.
Police officer Robert Conrad Acosta, 39, and his wife Monique Evette Acosta, 35, posted $65,000 bail each on Wednesday.
According to court records, caused extensive damage to their former home in an unincorporated areas near Murrieta in Southwest Riverside County, which totaled $200,000.
An inspector went to check out the house on June 15 and discovered damage including smashed stones from the outdoor facade, dye dumped on the carpets, torn-out wires, trees thrown in the swimming pool, and graffiti throughout the home, court records said.
The couple reportedly stole the garage door, air conditioners, decorative beams, counter tops, cabinets, fixtures and woodwork as well.
Robert Acosta's attorney, Albert Arena, says the damage estimates have been greatly exaggerated.
The Acostas were charged Monday with destroying and carrying away items from a mortgaged property with the intent to defraud or injure, said Riverside County District Attorney's Office spokesman John Hall.
They face felony charges that could put them in prison for up to four years if convicted.
According to court records, the San Diego Metropolitan Credit Union gave the couple until July 1 to move out of their home so it could be foreclosed.
A witness reportedly told authorities the Acostas were moving items out of the home on June 12.
The missing items were later recovered from a storage unit belonging to the pair.
Robert Acosta works as a police officer in San Diego, but is on unspecified administrative leave.
