Santa Monica Reconsiders Match Making |
SANTA MONICA ( KTLA) -- A 46-year ban on dating services doing business in Santa Monica may be lifted during Tuesday's city council meeting.
According to a city report, the proposed move reflects changes in society's view of such services, particularly in the Internet age.
"The Municipal Code currently prohibits the operation of escort services, personal introduction services, marriage bureaus, lonely hearts clubs, or other businesses of a like nature in the City of Santa Monica," according to the report. "This prohibition, which dates to a 1954 ordinance, is not consistent with current widespread acceptance of matchmaking services, most notably Internet-based services as a means of social introductions."
Under the proposal, escort services would still be banned, but dating and matchmaking services and "marriage bureaus" would be allowed. Those businesses would require a police permit and criminal background checks, according to the report.
