INGLEWOOD, CA -- Police are looking for a gunman who opened fire on a family picnic, killing a woman who died trying to shield her grandchildren from the gunfire.

It happened at Rodgers Park just before 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Police say the gunman appeared to be aiming at a 15-year-old boy, who hid behind a parked vehicle.

Stray bullets hit the teen in the arm and the woman in the ribcage, said Lt. Michael Marshall of the Inglewood Police Department.

The boy was treated and released but the woman died after surgery, Marshall said.

Family members say the woman, identified as 61-year old Gwen Taylor, was enjoying a day at the park with her grandchildren when the shooting occurred.

Taylor had six grandchildren and one great-grandchild,

Family members say she was trying to protect her grandchildren when she was shot.

"If it wasn't for her, her grandchild would have been (shot) by a stray bullet," Taylor's nephew, Rydell Prescott, told reporters.

Anyone who witnessed the shooting is asked to call the department's anonymous hotline at (888) 412-7463.
