HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KTLA) -- "Austin Powers" actor and former mixed martial arts fighter Joseph Hyungmin Son was convicted Thursday of torture in the Christmas Eve gang rape of an Orange County woman.
Son, 40, was arrested Oct. 7, 2008 on charges related to the 1990 incident.
He was already in custody for an unrelated vandalism charge and was linked to the 1990 crime when he gave a DNA sample to authorities following a probation violation.
The 20-year-old victim was walking her dog and looking at Christmas lights when she was abducted. No arrests were made for years until the DNA match pointed to Son.
Son, along with a second suspect, is accused of dragging the victim into the back of a car, pistol whipping her and threatening her life at gun point while he counted the bullets in his gun and raped her repeatedly, according to prosecutors. He is also accused of sexually penetrating the victim with his firearm before she was released naked with her pants tied around her eyes in Compton.
He was initially charged with multiple sexual assault charges and faced a maximum sentence of 275 years to life in prison. However, many of those charged where dropped because the statue of limitations had expired.
A co-defendant in the case pleaded guilty to rape, kidnapping and other charges, and was sentenced to 17 years in and four months in prison.
Son played the role of Dr. Evil's handyman,"Random Task," a shoe-throwing villain in Mike Meyer's 1997 blockbuster film "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery."
