74-year-old Gets 15 Years to Life for Stabbing Doctor
GLENDALE -- A patient who stabbed a Glendale cardiologist with a pocketknife during an appointment, leaving him paralyzed, has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
Mike Du Trieu, 74, was sentenced to an additional five years in prison for permanently paralyzing Dr. Mohamed Latif.
Trieu was convicted July 9 of trying to kill Latif.
The attack happened at the Heartbeat Cardiovascular Medical Group in the 600 block of Broadway in Glendale.
Jurors determined Trieu was sane when he stabbed Latif in the back, shoulders and face during an appointment.
Trieu claimed Latif killed his mother in 1994, and said he attacked him in retaliation, according to the district attorney's office.
Before his sentencing, Trieu asked the judge to take into account his military service 45 years ago and its effects on him.
"I hope you give me more dignity, so I can go seek treatment," he said.
Trieu also gave the judge a letter addressed to Latif, but its contents weren't disclosed.
