COSTA MESA (KTLA) -- A Costa Mesa maintenance worker jumped to his death Thursday just hours after being told he may be among 200 workers being laid off by the city, authorities said.

More than 200 workers for the city of Costa Mesa, about half the city's workforce, received get layoff notices Thursday.

The 29-year-old maintenance worker, who has not been identified, reportedly fell off the roof of the city hall building Thursday afternoon. Authorities said he had worked for the city for 4 years and was among those who were laid off.

The notices were given to 90 firefighters, 12 jail staff, 50 city maintenance workers and 30 dispatchers.

Earlier this month, the city council approved outsourcing 18 city services.

The layoffs won't take effect right away, because the city must legally give workers six months notice if jobs are being outsourced.

The cause of his death is currently under investigation.
