Big Brother and System Upload - Time Warner cable box

An incident that conjured up images of "Big Brother" my TV screen went blank with the exception of a box announcing a "system upgrade" and the cable box produced an error message right before the dramatic conclusion of a cable show. The TV could not even be turned off by pushing the power button on the remote.
Instead, after a call to Time Warner Cable an "agent" informed me that the "system upgrade" would take 45 minutes and happen at some unpredictable hour once a month. That is outrageous.

How is it possible that cable consumers are not only forced to convert to this digital cable box but are also subjected to an intrusive "system upgrade" on an ongoing, monthly basis with no warning and no consideration for them? And, they have to pay for that type of service. What's wrong with this picture? There ought to be a law against this type of outrageous service (and I use that word very liberally)!!!

Is Time Warner the JetBlue of cable television? Are Time Warner customers like JetBlue passengers forced to put up with shoddy service because held hostage by corporate arrogance and lack of consideration for a customer's convenience?
